CHAPTER 96: NOBILITY OF SOCIETY.

Truth, Discipline, Modesty, Equity, Kindness, Munificence etc. are qualities of ancient societies of traditional values. They are to be cherished and sustained to flourish and preserve civilizations.

Bravery, fervor, skills, sense of security, co-existence, toiling, fight for survival, diligence, habit of saving, calling and sharing and such other traits may be taken to have been acquired by observing other species. Humanity is unique in innovating with the help of reasoning and improving by experience the ways of agriculture, industry, crafts and fine arts; family and social life, orderly community existence, cultivating traditions and evolving civilizations.

The nobility of social life stems from qualities of discipline, veracity, happiness, comradeship, sense of same; and safeguarding form meanness, blame and instability.

‘adukkiya koudi perinum kudippiRanthaar
kuntRuva saeythal ilar’ kuraL 954

People of good social traditions shun blemishes
Even in the face of baits of many millions.

Equity and modesty naturally reside in a family of traditional heritage. Natural traditions of nobility of a family and society with pleasant, munificent courtesy, despite ways and means, save the virtues of discipline, truth and modesty. Purity and virtues of family life disdains cunning deeds unworthy of dignity and honor.
Defects in people of prestigious descent appear prominent as dark spots on the moon. Indifference and callousness to manners expose family honors to doubt.
Health of plants, reveal richness of the soil; social values ring in positive tongues. All good and gains sprout from modesty of acts; glory of a traditional society shines in humility.

CHAPTER 97: SENSITIVITY TO DIGNITY

The unique quality of dignity and honor (maanam for which there appears no single equivalent word in any other language, is variously described as dignity, honor, self-respect), has evolved thro’ long traditions of culture and civilization in the advancement of Thamizh culture. It is held precious than life and denotes non-deterioration in ones status. The word seems to have been derived from kavarimaan, a rare variety of Yak deer that ends its life when it senses its body hair falling due to aging. I very intricate sense of honor is implied in it that, life is not worth when the body is unfit for it. This is on the higher side of human values.

‘marunthou-matRu vuun-oumbum vaazhkai perunthamaimai
Peedu-azhiya vantha idaththu’ kuraL 969

When dignity and honor run the risk of forfeiture
Life as a medicine to nurse body is of no avai.

Even those, indispensably advantageous, give up those affecting dignity. Who pursue valor and fame do not indulge in deeds not befitting their dignity. Humility is the ‘sin qua non’ in prosperity and fame; even in adversities uphold dignity. Decline in status is like hair falling from the head.
A mean act, even tiny like a berry seed, diminishes respect for the mighty like a hill.
There is no sustained pleasure without fame; why then toe and cringe behind the ones who snub in scorn? It is better to die in dignity than hankering after disregard, compromising honor. Those who do not wish to see their honor sink are leading lights, the world adorns and hails.
