THIRUKKURAL – A SONNET A DAY – No. 113. December 2, 2009

CHAPTER 98. PROTECTION OF PRIDE IN GREATNESS.

Legitimate pride resides safeguarded in greatness, virtues, veracity and skills, contra-distinct from vanity, pettiness and meanness.

Kural couplet 972 stresses that, ‘all lives on earth are born with equal rights; merits vary according to vocational skills. This is a basic code against artificial and selfish discrimination of caste, creed, descent and vocations, enunciated in Manu’s codes, referred to Bhagavat Gita also (Ch 4- 1,6, 13, 14, Ch.7- 12, 14, Ch.18- 41, 44), that God created arbitrary racial systems of four castes, and three unalterable categories (of people-viz. Virtuous, Passionate and Ignorant). Epic Ramayana by Valmeeki states that drums, rustics, outcasts and women are fit to be beaten like animals. Kaudilya’s Arthasastra says that harlots who refuse to extend pleasure to commandeer of the king are to be punished by whipping thousand times. According to Sanadhanic cult, people born between Himalayas and Vindhya mountains alone are eligible to practice Vedic rituals and attain salvation at the feet of God.
These are totally contrary and alien to Thamizh culture and Dravidian civilization which have fostered from ancient times equality of status and opportunities for every one in the social order. Conflicts started when other religions like Buddhism and Jainism in the North refuted and challenged the audacious attitude of Sanadhanis, encompassed all people spreading the concepts of equality. It is history that the conventionalists convinced and conspired with ruling clans, suppressed and drove out by cruel force, Buddhism and contained Jainism; spread to the South and did considerable damage, dissection and degradation to the social and cultural values and cohesiveness of Thamizh Dravidian civilization. It was only in the later parts of 19th and 20th centuries that renaissance and rationalist movements started in Thamizh Naadu to retrive the language and cultural values of the past, as a mission at social engineering.
Poet ManounmaNiyam Sundaranaar said: ‘One who has clearly studied and understood ThirukkuraL will never think of Manu’s discriminatory codes of justice varying caste-wise.
Poet Barathi said: ‘There are no casts; it is a sin to classify and discriminate people on the basis of birth’.
Poet Barathidaasan said: ‘Philosophy of the owls, caste differences, religious divisions, faulty codes, faltering justice, blind habits all are to be driven out by hard efforts’.

‘perumai perumitham inmai siRumai
Perumitham vuurnthu vidal’ kuraL 979

Greatness, sans vanity, is just pride; pettiness
Rides in boastful joy, on offensive vanity.

Strength of pure mind is light of greatness; life devoid of just pride is baneful. Wealth alone is not great; the honest maintain virtues even in extreme privation. Greatness, like chastity, has to be guarded by discipline and veracity. Great deeds are achieved by rare skills, acting with pride on a mission of fulfillment. Greatness always bows in dignified modesty; meanness revels in self-acclaimed vanity. To be learned is legitimate pride; to proclaim greatness with pride, is vanity; to be aware that what we know is only handful is modesty.

The pride of greatness does not expose weaknesses; vanity of smallness proclaims in vilification.
